Archive for Top Gun Sprints

Not since Steve Kinser took the IROC world by storm has there been this much buzz about sprint car drivers mingling with drivers that prefer fenders and roofs.

It’s almost here, the biggest event of the year, Florida’s finest sprint car drivers strapping into go karts at the Lil 500 in Maitland Friday night, but first some miscellaneous debris for you…

The FMSA had their big meeting this past weekend, which brings about some upcoming changes for the club, most notably:

  • Head and neck restraints become mandatory in 2012. We applaud this.
  • 24 + cars means there will be a B Main in 2011. We applaud this too, and expect it on a regular basis given their car counts throughout 2010.
  • Feature lineups for 2011 will follow a points inversion schema, much like most of us have come to know and love with the way the TBARA lines up their features. We applaud this one too as it will bring more passing at the pointy end of the field.

We had yet another pavement sprint car driver inquire about running some Top Gun Sprint Series races in 2011…

We’ve had quite a few of you ask about the 2011 Top Gun Sprint Series schedule. Hold tight kids, Don Rehm assures us it is coming out shortly. The season opener is at Hendry County Motorsports Park on February 26, in conjunction with the Swamp Cabbage Festival. You’re damn right we want to see who wins the Ms. Swamp Cabbage competition.

Quite a few of you coming in from other parts of the country have once again inquired about seeing the TBARA at New Smyrna, a traditional highlight for those fans hanging out by the big track during February. Sadly, this is not to be this year. But feel free to call New Smyrna Speedway and voice your displeasure, hell, write them a letter if you like, and using the phrase “suck it” is totally up to you, but just remember that you get farther in life using sugar rather than vinegar:

  • New Smyrna Speedway
  • PO Box 1500
  • New Smyrna Beach, FL 32170
  • 386-427-4129

We’ve lined up a big USAC star for our 10 Questions, but he’s currently competing at the Chili Bowl and is a threat to win. He’s helping us get the word out about the USAC show at Ocala Speedway, which we are super very excited about.

Speaking of the Chili Bowl, don’t forget that the hopes of Florida rest upon the shoulders of former TBARA and CFWS champ, and current Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series champ Travelin’ Troy DeCaire, who takes to the track Friday night in this gem right here.

Troy DeCaire's ride for the Chili Bowl.

And last but not least, tomorrow is the big night for some go kart racing at the Lil 500 in Maitland. We’ll dedicate a whole post to it tomorrow, but here are a few important items:

  • It’s going to be cold, bundle up. Really cold.
  • We’ll have beer and energy drinks and possibly snacks.
  • The official start time is 7:00, but we usually go for a few hours, so don’t sweat the start time too much.
  • We’ll try to park in the side parking lot, and your webmaster drives a black Ford Edge with a Steele Performance decal on the back window. Our Factory Driver’s SMART car will most likely be parked next to it. You read that right…
  • We’ll try to bunch ourselves together as best we can to race against each other.
  • Steven Darvalics has some crazy race rules he wants us to try…
  • There are plenty of food establishments nearby like the Ale House, Wing House, etc. if we decide we all want to eat and drink more afterward.
  • We might have video to record.
  • We will take pictures.

More to come tomorrow!

My goodness, the options you fine people have for taking in some high quality sprint car racing this weekend, it is astounding.

Let’s get things kicked off tonight. Ladies, you got a bra to throw at a mini sprint driver? Head on over to Ocala Speedway for the return of our Editor at Speed, as the one, the only, “The Hot Foot” Brian Penrose returns to mini sprint action! And he’s had a small army of people helping him out lately.

The crew from Wendy Mathis Racing scaled up his car and gave it the once over last night, Steve Heisler did some work on Brian’s motor to solve the issues he’s been having, Don Heckman was seen bending Brian’s ear about shocks, we hear Paulie Millum may have been consulted, and our own FSCF.com Factory Driver Flyin’ Ryan Partin has been pitching in with setup advice.

No pressure though Brian.brathrowing

Ladies of the greater Ocala watershed area, we once again ask that you please refrain from throwing your bras at Brian during hotlaps. Please form an orderly line at the Team Penrose hauler and he will sign your undergarments at that time.

Then comes Saturday night. Wings, no wings, pavement, dirt, big, small…you’ve got it all.

Itching for some dirt in your beer? Truck on up to Lake City, friends. Our own Flyin’ Ryan Partin has got his motor fixed up, lovingly tuned for more ponies, mounted and ready to go and maintain his Top Gun points lead. And if that alone were not reason enough to go (because maybe you woke up and fell on your head this morning or something) check out this list of drivers scheduled to show:

Mike Schroeder. Troy Knowles. Tony Agin. Rich Alexander. Matt Kurtz. Mark Ruel Jr. Gene Lasker. Dan Jones. Bruce Durden. Ashlynn Durden. Rocky Sullivan. And the return to dirt of Amanda Ferguson!

Kaboom3KABOOM!

Down the road at Citrus County, you are going to see an explosion of wingless sprinters on the pavement. This is shaping up to be a major barn burner as well. You want drivers? The CFWS is looking to have about 20 of them.

Travelin’ Troy DeCaire. His sister Traci. Dakota Stephens. Steve Heisler. Dennis Misuraca. Channing Conley. Mike Jenkins Jr. Dude Teate. (!) Lil Jimmy Alvis. Big  Jimmy Alvis. Mark Gimmler. Stan Butler. Tommy Nichols. Sonny O’Sullivan. Steven Bradley. Blaze Martin. Joey “The Ace” Aguilar.  Could be more, but these are the names we’re hearing.

Kaboom2KABOOM!

Down at CCMP the TQs are back in action. Though I’m not sure if your Bobby Bucks are still valid since Bobby Diehl is stepping down and Gary LaPlant is taking over. Gary Bucks doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as well…

So where will the FSCF.com staff be? Who knows? We appear to be a house divided at the moment. 66% of our staff will be at Ocala tonight. On Saturday, 100% of us may be at Citrus County, or there might be 33% of us at Lake City and 66% at Citrus County, or there could be 66% of us at Lake City and 33% of us at Citrus County.

We’re just thankful to have such tough decisions to make! This is going to be an awesome weekend of sprint car racing people! Round up your posse and mobilize on Saturday!

Don’t let the infighting of our staff distract you. It won’t turn into this, I assure you. Well, hopefully not. If Josh looks at me wrong, it might. Doubtful. I’m just saying Josh, learn from Ole Anderson’s mistakes. Don’t let history repeat itself.

The rules for the limited sprint show on the 15th are, per Ken Kinney: “Top Gun Sprint Series rules strictly enforced”.

Rules are at www.topgunsprints.com .

Carry on.
