Archive for Larry Brazil Jr.

This weekend welcomes the return of the TBARA Central Florida Double Header that was always a summer highlight for those of us living in the middle of the state that was sadly missing from last year’s schedule. And those are the only sprint car races this weekend, so that’s where you are going.

First up is the always tricky Orlando Speed World. We highly recommend you make this one because OSW has been a ghost town lately. On one hand, they need the money. And on the other hand, if they don’t answer the bell next year, you’ll be kicking yourself for not going this year.

We also hear you might be able to get one of these at the Ben Fritz Racing hauler:

That’s right! If you were at Desoto Speedway for the last TBARA race, you know what a hot commodity this limited edition flashlight really is. It was such a hot item that the womenfolk got into a fight over it! So if you’ve ever wanted to send signals to your driver, or merely blind your driver’s competitors, look no further than the Ben Fritz Signature Model Flashlight!

We would say car count should be about what the TBARA has been seeing these days, with a few extras possibly showing up. Brian Riddle looks to be making the trip and our Editor at Speed “The Hot Foot” Brian Penrose drove past the establishment that houses Sonny O’Sullivan’s car and Penrose saw a wing sitting out there, so you might see Sonny O at one of (our both) of the races this weekend.

Then it’s over to the high banks of New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday, for the lone track where Yuengling is a viable (and highly recommended) choice of adult beverage. NSS always provides big speed and big fun. You should go.

So who do we like this weekend? The first name that jumps out as being overdue for a win is Larry Brazil Jr. Also, flashlight jokes aside, Ben Fritz has showed serious speed lately. Then there’s “Hollywood” Bo Hartley who ran very well earlier this year at NSS. You could also argue that points leader Shane Butler is overdue for a win. And on top of all of that, Travelin’ Troy DeCaire has flown in from Indiana to race this weekend, and he’s been killing it at NSS lately.

UPDATE – “The Smooth Operator” Mickey Kempgens is confirmed to run both the races in the DeCaire Motorsports #41 this weekend as well. Don’t count him out at OSW either.

So when I place my wagers tonight with Mr. Penrose in the bleachers at OSW, I’m going with Ben Fritz at OSW and Troy DeCaire at NSS.

Speaking of Travelin’ Troy, check out this excellent short documentary of Shane Hmiel and Troy at the last USAC Silver Crown race.

But when you are driving down Highway 50 to get to OSW, you should take in the historical significance of that road and how you could make your way over to the Econlockhatchee Trail to the Eddie Graham Sports Complex, the long time home of Florida Championship Wrestling.

TBARA Race Report – 03.27.10

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Date: March 27, 2010

Track: Desoto Super Speedway ( Bradenton, FL )

Series: TBARA

Admission: Pit Pass – $30

# of Sprint Cars: 19

Who Won:
Heat 1 – Larry J. Brazil, Jr.
Heat 2 – Shane Butler
Heat 3 – Dave Retzlaph
Feature – Larry J. Brazil, Jr.

Crowd Grade: C-. There were more fans on the grandstand side than we are accustomed to seeing at Desoto.

Track Grade: C. It appeared that the grounds crew had been busy working since we were there last. It’s great to see them taking pride in what could be one of the best facilities in the state.

Series Grade: B+. It’s very uncharacteristic of the TBARA to show up with only 19 cars. But given the previous weekend in the Panhandle, we can sympathize with the teams that didn’t show. It makes for a really short week when you have a doubleheader seven hours from home. But I will say that the field that showed up was a very stout one. Any of about 15 cars were capable of being up front.

Sorry, but no food or drink report. :(

FSCF.com Driver of the Race: Dude Teate. Dude definitely had the BioBased.US #0 Ford pointed in the right direction. Dude charged from his 7th starting spot and was running 3rd by lap 8. Dude had made the pass for the lead on lap 23, but a caution caused the field to revert to the previous lap. He and race winner, Larry J Brazil, Jr. put on a show as they battled the final seven laps for the checkers. Dude, we hope you like Yuengling.

Other Notes:
- On lap 6, the 15 of DJ Hoelzle , pulled to the top side of the track in turn 4 with a flat right rear tire.

- On the ensuing restart on lap 6, the 55 of Tommy Nichols hopped the right rear tire of Shane Butler’s 18 ride, catapulting him hard into the turn 2 wall. The 55 was destroyed, but thankfully Tommy was able to walk away with only minor ankle injuries from a broken driveline.

- The 19 of Dakotah Stephens was unable to compete for the night due to a broken u-joint in practice, which shattered the torque ball assembly and broke the motor plate.

- The interim crew chief for the 20B of Larry J Brazil, Jr., Shawn Grimes, was nearly relieved of his duties, as the car was unable to make the final pace lap to victory lane because the car ran out of fuel.

- Troy DeCaire was in his family owned 41 car (with a 68 on the side). Troy started 8th on the grid and was up to 2nd position by lap 9, but had to retire from the race with three to go due to ignition trouble.

Saturday night at Desoto Speedway represented a return to form for one of our favorite people – Larry Brazil Jr. 2008 was a whale of a year for Larry, 2009…not so much. Mechanical problems plagued Larry throughout much of 2009 and even the start of this season.

Known for being a man who loves horsepower and putting it to the ground as quick as he can, generally despite the pleas of his tires begging for mercy, Larry got it all right last night at Desoto Speedway.

Larry makes for the fourth different winner this year with the TBARA, and Dude Teate came home second, boldly declaring his intentions that he is back on form and that he too wants a piece of that championship fight.

This could very well be one of the most hotly contested championship fights we’ve seen in years with the TBARA.

Unfortunately there was a red flag for a crash involving Tommy “Gun” Nichols, but reports from the track were that Tommy is alright. One set of eyes at the track told us that Tommy got up over the wheel of another competitor and then went into the wall hard.

Also – show some love for David Retzlaff in the #92. David picked up a heat win and also came home seventh in the feature, just behind Joey “The Ace” Aguilar and just in front of Hustlin’ Steve Heisler.

Friend of the website Gary “Walk Quietly But Carry a Big” Johnson was roaming the pits and snapped a few pictures for us, including the #68/#41 hybrid driven by Troy DeCaire, who unfortunately had to pull off with motor issues.

Over at VSP, Brett O’Donnell brought the noise once again continuing his fine display of form so far this year with the FMSA. Our Editor at Speed “The Hot Foot” Brian Penrose had an up and down night, hanging around the top ten in the feature but unfortunately had to pull off right at the end as his engine started to miss and was losing oil pressure. Thanks again to Don Taylor of Taylor’s Garage in Ocklawaha for helping out Penrose Racing.

Here are Gary’s pictures and at the bottom is a picture of the TBARA final results.
