Archive for East Bay Reports

And now for something completely different…two race reporters dispatched to one race, both turning in race reports. Up first is our (vastly more reliable) Editor at Speed “The Hot Foot” Brian Penrose with his take on the action. Without further ado…

After watching this year’s Knoxville Nationals replay for about the fifth time, I just had to take in a dirt sprint car race. Thank you East Bay Raceway for filling that need.

DATE: September 4th, 2010.

SERIES: East Bay Sprints

ADMISSION PRICE: $25 Pit Pass

FOOD ORDERED: Cheeseburger & Hot dog

FOOD GRADE: A. The pit side cheeseburger was average but the hot dog more than made up for cheeseburger. The hot dog had good size and flavor.

DRINKS ORDERED: Water & Sweet Tea.

DRINKS GRADE: A. The sweet tea was full blown sweet.

CROWD GRADE: A. The place was packed. I would like to think it was for the return of the sprint cars after a more than a month lay off.

NUMBER OF SPRINT CARS: 19

WHO WON: Kurt Taylor

FSCF.COM DRIVER OF THE RACE: Plain and simple answer, Danny Jones. He started deep in the field and worked his way to a second place finish in the feature.

SERIES GRADE: B. Nice car count but I know there are more cars out there that have run at East Bay.

TRACK GRADE: B-. The surface blacked off a little but cars could run both the bottom and the top.

REST OF THE RACING GRADE: D. For the late model feature I watched after the sprint feature, it was painful to watch.

OTHER NOTES:

* Keith Butler continues to impress with his diverse driving talents from dirt to asphalt, both winged and non winged.

* It’s a shame to know that three sprint car hot shoes (Sport Allen, Greg Leonard & Tyler Godwin) were sitting in the stands and not racing. Plus Danny Martin.

* Lots of pavement racers in the house. Good to see Stan & Shane Butler, David Slawiak and retired racer Wendy Mathis.

* The Top Gun Sprints Series points championship between Ryan Partin & Tim George will be decided on the final race night. Mark my words. Tim George put in another strong and consistent run with a third place finish in the feature. Its looking like Tim will win the East Bay track championship.

* Great to see just about all the drivers tie ribbons on their top wings in honor of longtime East Bay car owner Bob Long. Bob passed away recently from his battle with cancer. Our condolences to the Long Family.

* Good to see some East Bay weekly lower division team members getting their “minds right” out behind their pick up truck. Just remember when the police ask about it, it was for medicinal purposes.

* I can honestly report that “Roller Derby” Josh “The Ladies Choice” Wichers was really in the house last night. Even sported a bit of a sunburn from his trip to Gainesville for the Gator game earlier in the day. Welcome back to the track Josh!

RACE REPORTER: “The Hot Foot” Brian Penrose

Also, our crack pits photog Gary “Walk Quietly But Carry A Big” Johnson snapped some photos. Our apologies for a few of the blurry ones, particularly the one of Mean Gene and Crew, which would have been a nice one. We’ll get a better one next time guys.

Track: East Bay Raceway Park ( Tampa, FL )

Series: East Bay Sprints

Admission:
Pit Pass – $25

# of Sprint Cars: 15

Who Won:
Heat 1 – Tim George
Heat 2 – Danny “The Hammer” Martin
Feature – DANNY MARTIN JR

Crowd Grade: B. It wasn’t the best crowd that I’ve seen at East Bay, but it was fairly healthy. East Bay continues to pull really strong car counts in most of their classes. I think I counted 26 cars roll out for the 4 Cylinder Bomber race. You gotta keep the crowd interested to keep them coming back, and East Bay is doing a good job at that. But who knows, it might not be the car counts at all, maybe it’s the deviled crab that keeps them coming back. It was the deciding factor for me to drive from Lake City to Tampa. When the “Bushnell Bullet” asked me if I wanted to go to East Bay after the downpour at Lake City, I said, “heck yeah, I’ll go get one of their famous crab rolls!”

Track Grade: B+. Now I’m no dirt track aficionado by any means, but the track looked better than I’ve seen there in a really long time. No ruts. No huge mini sprint swallowing holes. No major bumps. No mud slung everywhere. And not so dusty that you couldn’t see the flagman. I’m not sure if the tide was just right, or maybe the track crew just did their homework, but kudos to East Bay for a really well prepared track.

Food Ordered: Deviled Crab

Food Grade:
A++. This succulent morsel of divinity was so worth the trip from Lake City! If you’ve been to East Bay and you haven’t tried this delicious masterpiece, you’re missing out. If you haven’t been to East Bay, then you gotta go just to try the deviled crab. And the racing isn’t bad either. I spoke to the gentleman that was running the pit side concession, I think he said that his brother-in-law owns Kazbor’s, and told him how much I like the crab roll. He was telling me that they get them freshly handmade from a lady at the produce market over on Hillsborough Ave in Tampa. She even makes mini crab rolls, perfect for your next get together. I gave him one of our fancy new FloridaSprintCarFans.com decals to display on his Coca-Cola cooler in the concession stand. (Thanks again to MK Designs – the official graphics supplier of FSCF.com) And if he’s reading this right now, we would love to have Kazbor’s as the official restaurant of FSCF.com. They have some yummy vittles!

Drinks Ordered: Sweet Tea (of course)

Drinks Grade: A. The sweet tea was top notch Saturday night. Probably the best I’ve had at East Bay in a while. They still have some pretty stiff competition from the folks over at Volusia Speedway Park, but they’re a real close second at this point. And the nice thing was the consistency. I had a glass of tea at the grandstand concession and the pit concession, and both were very good. I can’t wait for my next trip to East Bay for the deviled crab and the sweet tea!

Series (Class) Grade: C+. The East Bay Sprints brought 15 cars to the track Saturday for their monthly appearance at the Clay by the Bay. We’ve seen much better car counts there and would like to see that all the time. We definitely missed seeing Gene Lasker back out, but hopefully he’ll have his ship pointed in the right direction soon.

FSCF.com Driver of the Race: Travis Bleimeister. The surprise of the night for me was Travis Bleimeister. I’ve seen Travis several times, going back to the days when he and Paulie Milum were pit pals and neighbors on the backstretch. But Travis has came soooooooo far with his abilities. To my knowledge, he hasn’t been out frequently. Bleimeister did start on the front row, but managed to lead several laps before Danny Martin Jr, who started inside of row 2, finally got by him on lap 8. Even after “The Hammer” was at the point, Bleimeister pulled to the back bumper of Martin Jr and looked like he might challenge for the lead numerous times. Given the experience of “The Hammer,” Bleimeister had nothing to be ashamed of by finishing 2nd.

Other Notes:

- After losing the rock, paper, scissors match against “Webmaster Whiz Kid” and the “Flyin’ Flatfoot”, I was the chosen one deployed to Lake City to cover our very first Central Florida Wingless Sprints race. I was really looking forward to covering this series and possibly getting some insight on when and where we might see them in action soon. My dad and I had made the incredibly long journey to northern Florida when, 8 miles from the track, the skies opened up to a toad strangling down pour. The rain was coming down so heavy and hard that from the north bound lanes of I75, we couldn’t see the south bound lanes. Upon our arrival at the track, the infield resembled a small shallow lake, complete with no wake signs. After watching half of the 20 or so race haulers that had gathered in the infield depart the speedway, we decided to make the even longer trek to south Tampa to get a deviled crab and take in a dirt sprint car race.

- Rich Pratt, in the Meeks Transport Racing #2 machine, had a very impressive run considering his taxi cab experience. Despite battling fuel issues most of the night, Pratt drove to a solid 5th place finish.

- I arrived too late at East Bay to apply any of our fancy smancy FloridaSprintCarFans.com decals to any clean cars. But if anyone would like to display your love for our little site, stop us as we wonder the pits, or drop us a line, and we’ll gladly get one to you.

- Billy Boyd has made a very fast transition from his open wheel modified into the sprint car ranks. Billy posted a very solid 3rd place drive behind Martin Jr and Bleimeister, keeping 7 time track champion, Tim George, behind him on his way to the checkers.

- Uncharacteristically of the East Bay Sprints, there were only 3 caution flags that flew on the field. All 3 of those were for spun cars. And 13 of the 15 cars that pushed off for the feature finished the 15 circuits.

- We would love to see the East Bay Sprints have a longer feature than 15 laps. Fifteen laps just doesn’t seem fair!

- Visit www.winglesssprints.com for more info about the Central Florida Wingless Sprints series. Club President Michael Rudolph told us that the race that was rained out at Columbia Motorsports Park (Lake City) has been rescheduled for October 30th. Unfortunately, the TBARA is at Desoto Super Speedway the same night. TBARA regulars Joey “The Ace” Aguilar and points leader Shane Butler were both at CMP for the CFWS race. The staff at CFWS are working on scheduling more races for this season and should have those posted soon.

And now for something completely different, we give you special guest reporter Wendy Mathis, who is currently working with Jeanette Burnett’s team as she mulls her sprint car options while gearing up to head to Australia once again for some dirt racing.

Big thanks to Wendy for sending in her notes.

Date: May 22,2010

Track: East Bay Raceway Park.

Series: East Bay Sprints.

No heat races since it was double features tonight.  Here are the results:

Make-up race:

  1. Tim George 1*
  2. Gene Lasker 02
  3. Billy Boyd 4
  4. Danny Jones 99
  5. Rocky Sullivan 15
  6. Rich Alexander 8
  7. Kerry Gilbert 55
  8. Clint Reynolds 07
  9. Rick Byerly 50
  10. 10.Clyde Poole 85
  11. Jeannette Burnett 18
  12. Christine Auld 83
  13. Tony Agin 38
  14. Danny Martin Jr. 24
  15. Daniel “DJ” Peeples 30
  16. Jason Webster 21
  17. Mark Ruel Jr 83X
  18. Kurt Taylor 3K

I did not see the 83X or the 3K there tonight.  But they were there the night that we got rained out so they must have just added them to the tail of the field.  Any car that was not there the night of the rain out was not eligible to run the first feature.

2nd Feature:

  1. Rocky Sullivan 15
  2. Tim George 1*
  3. Tony Agin 38
  4. Keith Butler 19
  5. Danny Jones 99
  6. Rick Byerly 50
  7. Jeannette Burnett 18
  8. Billy Boyd 4
  9. Jason Webster 21
  10. Kerry Gilbert 55
  11. Christine Auld 83
  12. Rich Alexander 8
  13. Kyle Welchance 47W
  14. Gene Lasker 02
  15. Troy Knowles 27
  16. Danny Martin 24
  17. Clyde Poole 85
  18. DJ Peeples 30
  19. Clint Reynolds 07

The 4 car of Billy Boyd was penalized two spots at the pay window for jumping a restart.  The 07 was disqualified due to an illegal carb, which got us to thinking that the tech man really has no clue what he is doing.  It is a stock Willy’s carb so it should have been fine and Clint is not the kind of guy that would cheat.

Series Grade: B. For being a double feature night, ttey had a great group of cars and it was a very racy field.

Track Grade: C-. As usual the track got very dry slick and was almost like driving on pavement.

Crowd Grade: A. The back lot was very full.  The people seem to always come out for the good shows.

Food Grade: N/A. Did not have time to get food as we were making serious changes to the 18 car, everything from complete setup change to some engine adjustments.

Other Notes: This was one of the best races that I have seen at East Bay in a while.  Lots of passing with some cars bumping the wall coming out of turn 2.  Lots of action and excitement to go around.  Gene Lasker did have a run-in with the 27 of Troy Knowles.  The 27 was a lapped car and came up in front of Gene and unfortunately Gene got the short end of the stick and flipped several times.  In a quick once over of the car, the frame looks ok.  Looks like mostly bolt on parts that got damaged.

Driver of the race for the make-up race: I would have to give it to Tim George.  He drove a very smart race.  He was challenged by Gene Lasker but ended up prevailing.

Driver of the race for the 2nd feature: This one is a huge toss up!! Keith Butler drove from the 18th starting spot to a 4th place finish.  He drove a smart race and stayed out of trouble.  But I have to give it to Jeannette Burnett, who was coming back after a horrible crash two weeks earlier.  Holding a solid 4th place for the majority of the race, she unfortunately spun on her own, but showed that the crash did not faze her at all.  She was able to work her way back up to a strong solid 7th place finish.  Great driving on both Keith and Jeannette’s part!!
