Mickey Kempgens crushes TBARA field. Schatz and Dollansky win WoO events.
By
When it was all said and done, "The Smooth Operator" Mickey Kempgens was holding the big check and standing with the pretty girl in victory lane at New Smyrna Speedway. It doesn't get any better than that my friends.
The racing action was fast and furious Sunday as the TBARA rolled into New Smyrna Speedway and the World of Outlaws ran a double header at Volusia Speedway Park. Our Editor at Speed did the WoO early show and then NSS, while our Webmaster and son took in just the TBARA show. And our man Gary “Walk Quietly But Carry A Big” Johnson made the long drive to take in the TBARA action as well.
Our only note regarding the daytime World of Outlaws show was that our Editor at Speed said it was the worst surface he’s ever seen, so much so the feature was shortened to twenty laps and they were still burning off the right rears at a ridiculous pace.
Random TBARA Notes.
- To say Mickey Kempgens won the feature going away would be a mild understatement. Winning by six seconds and lapping up to fifth place is positively destroying the field. The Rudolph #68 was simply in another ZIP code Sunday night.
- Car count was a mystery coming into this event, but a nice field of 23 sprint cars were on hand.
- Brian Gingras was also predictably fast all night, but just a tick off.
- All eyes were on Troy DeCaire in the Lenny Puglio #91 and Troy led some laps in the feature and finished the night second.
- TBARA defending champ Johnny Gilbertson was quietly fast all night and hung around the top five.
- Dave Steele was in the Cipray #5 in practice but the motor let go and the car was done for the night.
- Jason Cox’s #40 was a very pretty (for lack of a better term…) car with what is reputed to be a painted car devoid of the common wraps and decals of the modern era.
- Long-time competitor Wendy Mathis was back in action, with Bobby Gordon in the #90 as her teammate. Wendy held off Rex “Boneman” Hollinger in her heat but was an early retirement in the feature.
- You can’t miss John Gilbert Jr.’s bright green #7 and he was predictably fast all night, just like last year at New Smyrna. John makes the long tow from the Florida Keys.
- Stan Butler and Bobby Rose tangled to start their heat race, with Butler moving up in to Rose just past start/finish with both cars suffering damage. Hard to tell what happened, but thankfully both drivers were alright.
- Rookie Dean Bartholomew was behind the wheel of the #29 piloted by “Double G” Gary Gimmler last year, who was also in the pits.
- Haulin’ Collin Cabre lived up to his name by hauling the mail from the rear of the field in the feature.
- It was good to see Dude Teate back in competition, but motor problems dogged them throughout.

Don’t forget the TBARA is back in action tonight at New Smyrna Speedway.
need to check finishing order for sunday 68 was first 91 was second and 77 was third
Maybe if the TBARA would post their race results we would know the official finish?
I don’t know what to tell you there…
My son got too tired due to the late hour and we left before the feature was over. Brian stayed and said the top five looked like Kempgens, DeCaire, Gilbert, Gingras, Cox, Gilbertson, Cabre.
Because for some inexplicable reason New Smyrna Speedway’s website is not posting official race results, I copied the race results from the Speed51 website because that’s the only place I’ve seen results, but sprint cars aren’t their forte, so I’m sure the pointy end of the field was what Brian said.
Todd
Congrats to Mickey he drove a great race and just a class act !! Check out his video on Youtube Chase did for him !! Can’t say enough about Mr. Rudolph knows how to set a car up just ask Lenny… Lol Great job Mickey..

Speedweeks just magnifies TBARA’s inability to get results out in a timely fashion.
It might be more efficient to call every driver and ask them where they finished at this point and take their word for it…
I’m sure Safety Kleen loves that enormous K&N banner in those photos.
The results were on Hoseheads one hour after the race monday night.
Saftey Klleen aslo had a Banner up for the photos, it just so happens the one posted here is K&N.

So if I want to know the TBARA race results I should check Hoseheads and not the TBARA website.
